U54: Specialized Center Cooperative Agreements
Specialized Center Cooperative Agreements (U54) support multidisciplinary research centers across the full spectrum of biomedical investigation—from basic science through clinical research—and may include ancillary activities such as patient care essential to the research effort. Centers often arise in response to targeted NIH or Institute programmatic needs and may serve as regional or national research resources:
Eligibility Criteria:
-
Applications must respond to an active NIH or NIDDK Request for Applications (RFA) or Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA); unsolicited U54 applications are not accepted.
-
Applicant institutions and investigators must meet any specific requirements outlined in the targeted RFA (e.g., research focus, prior funding base, consortium arrangements).
-
For NIDDK U54 programs, eligibility details vary by center type (Kidney, Hematology, Urology, PKD, Rare Diseases Consortia).
Funding Details:
-
Mechanism: U54 Cooperative Agreement (multi-component center grant).
-
Supports center administration, shared resources, multidisciplinary research projects, pilot studies, and career-development/enrichment programs.
-
Funding levels, project periods, and cost-sharing requirements are specified in each RFA.
-
NIDDK-supported U54 programs include:
-
George M. O’Brien Kidney Centers
-
Cooperative Centers of Excellence in Hematology (CCEH)
-
George M. O’Brien Urology Centers (CAIRIBU)
-
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Research Consortium
-
