The NIH R01 grant supports discrete, specified research projects led by the named investigator(s), reflecting their specific expertise and interests. The R01 is NIH’s flagship funding mechanism for independent research projects across the biomedical and behavioral sciences.
Special Considerations:

Early Stage Investigators (ESI): Applications with all PD/PIs holding ESI status receive special review consideration.

Katz ESI Change-in-Direction Grant: Supports innovative projects by ESIs without preliminary data.

Continuous Submission Policy: Available for PD/PIs serving on NIH review panels or advisory committees, allowing rolling submissions.
