Wellcome Career Development Awards
Wellcome Career Development Awards fund mid-career researchers with leadership potential to drive innovative programmes of work—delivering significant shifts in understanding human health and wellbeing over an 8-year period.
Eligibility Criteria:

Mid-career researcher who has completed substantial post-training research and made important field contributions.

Based at a not-for-profit organisation in the UK, Republic of Ireland, or a low-/middle-income country (excluding India and mainland China).

In a fixed-term role (≤4 years remaining) may request own salary; permanent/long-term contract (>4 years) must have salary underwritten. LMIC applicants on permanent contracts may request salary.

Able to commit ≥80% FTE to research (≤20% non-research; ≤40% clinical for craft specialties).

May hold one Career Development Award and co-applicant on up to two other Wellcome awards.

Not eligible if holding or having held an equivalent mid-career award or awaiting decision on this scheme.
Funding Details:

Amount: You request justified resources; annual spend typically ≤£250,000 (excluding applicant salary); proposals >£250,000 scrutinised.

Duration: Usually 8 years (part-time options extend duration).

Use of Funds: Applicant salary (where eligible); staff; training/CPD; consumables; animals; equipment; access charges; overheads; travel/subsistence; fieldwork; inflation; open access; clinical research; public engagement; CROs; other justified costs.
