
Research Project Grant (R01)
NIH’s R01 grant supports discrete, specified, and circumscribed independent research projects led by named investigator(s), across any area of biomedicine, including cancer research—allowing flexible budgets and 1–5 year project periods.
Eligibility Criteria:

Applicant Organization: Domestic and foreign institutions eligible for NIH awards (academic, non-profit, for-profit, government).

Principal Investigator(s): Any career stage investigator with appropriate expertise; Early Stage Investigators (ESI) receive special consideration when all PD/PIs hold ESI status at submission.

Research Scope: Must propose a focused project aligned with the scientific priorities of at least one participating NIH Institute or Center; basic biology, translational, clinical, or population health research are all responsive.
Funding Details:

Budget: Generally uncapped; must reflect actual project needs. Modular budgets apply for domestic applicants under NIH policy.

Project Period: Up to 5 years (1–5 budget periods of 12 months each).

Allowable Costs: Salary and fringe for PD/PIs and key personnel; equipment; supplies; consultant services; alterations/renovations; publications; contract and consortium costs; indirect (F&A) costs; travel.

Renewals: Competing renewals permitted for additional project periods.
