
DoD FY25 Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program Career Development Award – Scholar Option
Supports independent, early-career investigators (“Scholars”) to conduct impactful cancer research under the mentorship of an experienced Career Guide within the interactive Virtual Cancer Center (VCC), fostering leadership and translational impact in congressionally mandated topic areas.
Eligibility Criteria:

Principal Investigator (“Scholar”):
-
Independent investigator at or above the level of Assistant Professor/Instructor (or equivalent) and on a tenure track.

Within 7 years of terminal degree by July 3, 2025 (excluding clinical training or family leave).

Holds independent laboratory space and commits ≥25% effort in years 1–2.

Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible.

Career Guide:
-
Designate one mentor at Associate Professor level (or higher) with a strong record of cancer research funding, publications, and mentorship.

Mentor must commit to VCC participation and may mentor only one Scholar.

Organizations: Extramural or intramural U.S. or foreign academic institutions, biotech companies, foundations, DOD labs, for-profit or non-profit.

Other: No cost sharing; must address at least one FY25 PRCRP topic area and one PRCRP strategic goal, and demonstrate relevance to military health.
Funding Details:

Total Pool: ~$9.9 million to fund ~9 awards

Award Cap: Up to $1.1 million total costs (direct + indirect) per award over a maximum 4-year performance period (funds expire September 30, 2031; awards made by September 30, 2026) .

Allowable Costs: Salary support, supplies, equipment, travel (VCC meetings and up to two scientific meetings/year), VCC participation costs (hardware/software), data sharing; no clinical trial costs.
