DoD FY25 Melanoma Research Program Focused Program Award – Rare Melanomas

Supports a multidisciplinary research program of 2–3 complementary projects addressing a unifying question in rare melanoma (e.g., uveal, mucosal, acral) biology, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, or survivorship. Awards fund high-impact, synergistic efforts from discovery through clinical translation, including clinical trials when appropriate. 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicant Organizations: Extramural and intramural U.S. or foreign academic institutions, biotech companies, foundations, DOD laboratories, and other public or private entities (for-profit and non-profit). 

  • Principal Investigators:

    • Initiating PI: Independent investigator at ≥ Associate Professor level (or equivalent) dedicating ≥ 10% effort.

    • Partnering PI(s): Independent investigators at ≥ Assistant Professor level (or equivalent).

  • Team Composition: 2–3 PIs, each leading one project; consumer/collaborator engagement strongly encouraged.

  • Scope: At least two distinct but synergistic research projects; may include preclinical studies, translational work, and clinical trials (with requisite preliminary data).

  • Cost Sharing: Not required; awards made to organizations.

Funding Details:

  • Total Pool: ≈ $5.6 M to fund ~2 awards

  • Award Cap: Combined total costs ≤ $2.8 M per award over up to 4 years

  • Allowable Costs: Direct and indirect costs per negotiated rate; personnel, supplies, equipment, travel (including milestone meeting), data sharing infrastructure; no tuition.

  • Payments: Quarterly in U.S. currency to each PI’s institution. 

Deadlines:

  • Pre-Application (Preproposal): June 30, 2025 by 5 p.m. ET

  • Invitation to Submit Full Application: July 31, 2025

  • Full Application: October 1, 2025 by 11:59 p.m. ET

  • Verification Period Ends: October 7, 2025 by 5 p.m. ET

  • Peer Review: December 2025

  • Programmatic Review: February 2026
