
Future Leaders Fellowships
The Future Leaders Fellowships (FLF) program by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) offers long-term, flexible funding to support early career researchers and innovators aiming to establish or transition to independence. These fellowships are personal awards designed to foster impactful, cross-sector leaders in research and innovation across all disciplines within UKRI’s remit.
Eligibility Criteria:

Must be an early career researcher or innovator.

Applicants must be either:

Transitioning to independence,

Establishing independence,
-
Developing ambitious plans within a commercial setting.

Open to those hosted at UK-based academic or non-academic institutions eligible for UKRI funding.

No requirement for holding a permanent or open-ended contract.

Applicants must not have already achieved independence (e.g., through equivalent fellowships or leading substantial projects).
Funding Details:

Duration: Up to 7 years (initial 4 years + potential 3-year renewal).

Value: No minimum or maximum; previous awards range from £300,000 to over £2 million.

Covers salary (with tapered host contribution), project costs, equipment, training, and other justified expenses.

Flexibility for part-time work, clinical responsibilities, job-sharing, and career breaks.

Host institutions must commit to the applicant’s long-term career development.
