
Early Detection and Diagnosis Project Awards
The Early Detection and Diagnosis Project Awards from Cancer Research UK support high-impact research aimed at identifying and diagnosing cancer and pre-cancerous states earlier. These awards fund cutting-edge discovery, translational, and clinical projects with a clear line-of-sight to population or patient impact, and are open to both clinical and non-clinical researchers.
Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have postdoctoral experience or equivalent
-
Open to scientists, clinicians, and healthcare professionals
-
Must be affiliated with a UK university, hospital, medical school, or research institute
-
Multi-institutional and collaborative proposals, including with international or commercial partners, are welcome
Funding Details
-
Up to 500,000 British Pounds
-
Duration: Up to 4 years (3 years standard; 4 years if funding a PhD student)

Funds may be used for:

Postdoctoral and PhD researcher salaries
-
Technical staff
-
Research consumables and running costs
-
Equipment
-

Larger budgets can be considered with prior discussion with CRUK
Scientific Remit
Projects should address at least one of the following research areas:

Biomarker discovery and validation
-
Identification of high-risk groups
-
Data science and computation-driven diagnostics
-
Development of early detection models and technologies
-
Non-confirmatory clinical trials
-
Health systems and clinician decision-making research
-
Public behavior and health economics related to early detection
Special Focus
-
Applications from engineering and physical sciences are encouraged
-
Joint funding is available through the CRUK–EPSRC partnership for relevant projects
Out of Scope
-
Projects with no clear application to early detection or diagnosis
-
Population-level screening trials (may be suitable for CRUK’s Prevention and Population Research Committee)
