SOSCLC – AECC: Small Cell Lung Cancer. From Biological Networks to Personalized Therapy
Directed by Drs. Luis Paz-Ares and Marcos Malumbres, this project is Spain’s first nationwide collaborative effort focused on small cell lung cancer (SCLC), one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of cancer. Backed by the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), the SOSCLC consortium brings together over 300 researchers from across Spain, coordinated by Hospital 12 de Octubre and Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO), and supported by international institutions and companies dedicated to lung cancer research.
SCLC typically spreads rapidly, has poor prognosis, and is often diagnosed at an advanced stage—with only 3% of such patients surviving beyond five years. While tobacco use remains the primary risk factor, other environmental and occupational factors remain underexplored.
The key objectives of SOSCLC include:
-
Studying the distribution and risk factors of SCLC in Spain
-
Investigating cellular alterations and immune evasion mechanisms to develop targeted therapies
-
Promoting patient involvement in research and increasing public awareness of the disease
This initiative reflects a powerful convergence of science, clinical care, and patient advocacy to transform the treatment landscape of SCLC in Spain.
