HFSP Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships

The HFSP Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships offer early-career scientists with PhDs in non-biological fields (e.g. physics, engineering, math) the chance to transition into innovative life sciences research. These prestigious international fellowships support frontier research that stretches across disciplines and borders.

Deadline:

Letter of Intent: May 15, 2025 (must initiate LOI by May 7, 2025)
Full Proposal (by invitation): September 25, 2025
Fellowship Activation: Between April 1, 2026 – January 1, 2027

Funding Amount:

3-year fellowship including a living allowance, research & travel funds, and relocation & child allowances.
Example: In the USA, the total annual support can exceed USD 66,000 including travel and child allowance.

Key Criteria:

No prior training in life sciences required.
Must propose a project in the life sciences that is distinctly different from prior PhD or postdoc work.
Must change both country and research field.
Must have at least one lead-author peer-reviewed research article accepted or published by full proposal deadline.

Eligibility:

PhD (or equivalent) must be conferred between September 25, 2022 – December 31, 2026.
Must not have spent more than 12 months in proposed host country before fellowship start.
Host supervisor must not have been a prior supervisor or co-author.
Open to nationals of all countries, with placement depending on nationality and host country (must meet mobility requirements).

Selection Process:

Competitive two-stage review: Letter of Intent followed by Full Proposal (invitation only).
Evaluated on scientific novelty, interdisciplinary potential, and applicant’s fit for frontier research.
