ASCO24 Updates: Professor Nandita Khera on Overcoming Disparities in Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting is one of the largest and most prestigious conferences in the field of oncology. This year, the meeting took place from May 31 to June 4 in Chicago, Illinois. The event gathers oncologists, researchers, and healthcare professionals from around the world to discuss the latest advancements in cancer research, treatment, and patient care. Keynote sessions, research presentations, and panel discussions are typically part of the agenda, providing attendees with valuable insights into emerging trends and innovations in oncology.

This year, OncoDaily was at ASCO 2024 for the first time covering the meeting on-site. We had the pleasure of interviewing researchers who summarized the highlights of their work.

In this video, Professor Nandita Khera from Mayo Clinic, shared insights on ‘Hematopoietic Stem-Cell Transplantation: Exploring the Latest Advances and Gaps in Disparities, Psychosocial and Symptom Management Interventions, and Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease Care

Hello, I’m Nandita Khera, Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Mayo Clinic, Arizona. I’m here today to talk to you about this educational session that I am chairing for Advances in Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation. We have three exciting talks in this session, along with my co-presenters, Dr. Hermione Amonu and Dr. Betty Hamilton.

The goal of the session is to highlight the advances in hematopoietic cell transplantation, specifically trying to showcase the efforts to improve disparities in access and outcomes of transplant, the importance of providing supportive care, and the advances in prevention and treatment of chronic GVHD, which is a well-known complication of allogeneic stem cell transplant.

We hope that the session is important, not just for the transplanters who are trying to learn more to inform their practice, but also for non-transplant stakeholders like the referring oncologists, payers, patient advocates to learn about and be aware of the advances in the field, so that we can get patients who need to come to transplant, get optimal care as part of their treatment strategy.

Specifically, my session will be on overcoming disparities in hematopoietic cell transplantation, where I am going to talk about the current status of disparities, focusing on some highlights from a recent study that showed some evidence of progress in the field, but I will also be focusing on the efforts ongoing in the field, both in terms of scientific advances and system-level changes that are trying to mitigate disparities, indicating the commitment of leadership in the field to end these disparities.
