ASCO24 Updates: Building a Global Community for Medical Education Excellence

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting is one of the largest and most prestigious conferences in the field of oncology. This year, the meeting took place from May 31 to June 4 in Chicago, Illinois. The event gathers oncologists, researchers, and healthcare professionals from around the world to discuss the latest advancements in cancer research, treatment, and patient care. Keynote sessions, research presentations, and panel discussions are typically part of the agenda, providing attendees with valuable insights into emerging trends and innovations in oncology.

This year, OncoDaily was at ASCO 2024 for the first time covering the meeting on-site. We had the pleasure of interviewing researchers who summarized the highlights of their work.

In this video, Sam Brondfield, an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology at UCSF Health, shared insights from  their abstract Formation and evaluation of the ASCO medical education community of practice (Med Ed CoP).”

Hi everyone. We submitted an abstract to ASCO this year about the creation of a group that means a lot to me called the ASCO Medical Education Community of Practice. A community of practice is a group of people who get together and learn about a shared mutual interest and try to get better at it.

So this group that we created is a group of medical educators from around the United States and around the world who were interested in collaborating, creating community, and just learning together about how to be better medical educators. We began this group a few years ago and it’s grown really rapidly since then. We have almost 300 members now from a lot of different institutions, a lot of different countries, and we have really enjoyed meeting together each year at the annual meeting for the past three years now.

Very excited for our meeting this year. And the abstract we submitted is about some of the innovations and initiatives that our group has been doing, including creating a recurring review of the medical education literature and virtual gatherings for our community to continue to get to know each other and build together. And we have a lot more coming down the pike.

So very excited to be here at the annual meeting at ASCO and so excited to see my fellow medical educators together at our meeting.
