Thomas J. Lynch Jr. has served as President and Director of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center since February 2020, leading one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutions. During his tenure, Fred Hutch has strengthened its position as a global leader in basic, translational, and population-based cancer research, while deepening integration with clinical partners through the Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Cancer Consortium. Under his leadership, the center has advanced large-scale, collaborative research initiatives spanning immunotherapy, cancer prevention, infectious disease–cancer intersections, and data-driven discovery.

Lynch has overseen the continued expansion and modernization of Fred Hutch’s research infrastructure and cross-institutional clinical research enterprise, supporting investigator-initiated and consortium-wide studies with national and international impact. As Principal Investigator of the Cancer Center Support Grant, he has guided strategic investments in shared resources, workforce development, and interdisciplinary programs that accelerate translation from discovery to patient benefit.

An internationally recognized oncologist and scientist, Lynch previously held senior leadership roles across academia and industry, including Chief Scientific Officer at Bristol Myers Squibb, CEO of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, and Director of Yale Cancer Center. He is widely known for early work demonstrating the transformative impact of targeted therapies in EGFR-mutant lung cancer and remains an influential voice in oncology research and cancer center leadership.
