Stephen D. Nimer, is Director of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI-designated center serving over six million people in South Florida, and Executive Dean for Research as well as Professor of Medicine, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He joined the Miller School in 2012 after nearly 20 years at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he held leadership roles including Alfred P. Sloan Chair in Cancer Research, head of Hematologic Oncology, and Chief of Hematology. Under his leadership, Sylvester became the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Florida and the second youngest in the U.S., recognized in 2022 by U.S. News & World Report as a top-ranked cancer hospital.
Dr. Nimer is a physician-scientist specializing in hematologic malignancies, including MDS, AML, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma. His lab investigates the genetic basis and novel therapeutic approaches for these cancers, and he holds two patents related to leukemia treatment. He has been continuously funded by the NIH for over 30 years and has chaired major foundations, including the MDS Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation. Dr. Nimer has authored over 300 publications, holds multiple awards, and is a member of prestigious bodies including the American Society of Clinical Investigators, the Association of American Physicians, and the American College of Physicians.
