Paul Kagame is President of the Republic of Rwanda and the African Union (AU) Champion for Domestic Health Financing, a role through which he has advanced sustainable national funding for health systems, including cancer prevention and treatment across Africa. Under his leadership, Rwanda has implemented nationwide HPV vaccination programs, expanded universal health coverage, and strengthened primary care and referral systems relevant to cancer screening, diagnosis, and continuity of care.
As Chair of the African Union (2018–2019), he elevated noncommunicable diseases, including cancer, within continental health and development agendas. His parallel leadership as Co-Chair of the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development has supported digital health and data infrastructure with applications in oncology service delivery and population health.
