Patrick Dempsey is an American actor and philanthropist whose cancer advocacy has become a defining focus of his public life. While widely known for his acting career and his role in the TV series Grey’s Anatomy as Derek Shepherd, Dempsey has consistently used his public platform to elevate cancer awareness, survivorship, and community-based support.
His commitment to cancer support is deeply personal: in 1997, his mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In response, Dempsey founded The Dempsey Center in 2008 in Maine, providing free, comprehensive support services for individuals with cancer, survivors, caregivers, and families. By removing financial barriers to care, the Dempsey Center has become a vital resource for hundreds of people each year, emphasizing quality of life alongside medical treatment.
After Amanda Dempsey’s passing in 2014, her legacy of compassion and service was formally honored through the creation of the Amanda Dempsey Award, presented annually during the Dempsey Challenge. The award recognizes cancer survivors in Maine who demonstrate resilience and a commitment to supporting and inspiring others facing cancer, reflecting the values that guided Amanda’s life and Patrick’s advocacy.
Through the Dempsey Center and its programs, he has helped shift the conversation beyond treatment alone, underscoring the importance of emotional support, dignity, and hope for everyone affected by cancer.
