Michael R. Bloomberg is an entrepreneur and philanthropist whose giving has been instrumental for cancer care and public health globally. Through Bloomberg Philanthropies, he has committed more than $21 billion to data-driven initiatives targeting noncommunicable diseases, including tobacco control, environmental health, and health system reform. As the World Health Organization Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries, and through landmark smoke-free and public health policies implemented during his tenure as Mayor of New York City, Bloomberg has helped reduce cancer risk factors and improve population health worldwide.
In 2025, Bloomberg expanded his leadership in global cancer financing through the Bloomberg New Economy International Cancer Coalition. On the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly, the Coalition convened governments, ASCO, WHO leaders, clinicians, and financiers to advance early cancer prevention and sustainable financing models. It has helped catalyze momentum for a Global Cancer Financing Platform targeting at least $1 billion by 2030, with an initial focus on preventable cancers such as cervical and breast cancer and on strengthening systems in low- and middle-income countries. Recognized as the most generous living donor to any education institution in the United States, his philanthropy helped build a Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center, Bloomberg–Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, Institute for Cell Engineering, a stem-cell research institute, and in 2016, Bloomberg joined Vice President Joe Biden embracing the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative. His donations also increased financial aid for students enrolled in nursing, public health and other graduate programs, and in 2024, he was awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom.
