Loizos G. Loizou is a pioneer of pediatric oncology in Cyprus, a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Pediatric Oncology, Hematology, and Immunology at the University of Nicosia Medical School. Since founding the country’s first pediatric oncology services in 1990, he has led the establishment of comprehensive cancer care for children at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital in Nicosia, contributing to Cyprus achieving cure rates exceeding 80% for childhood cancers.
Beyond Cyprus, he has played a major role in strengthening pediatric oncology capacity in low-resource settings, collaborating with the Groupe Franco-Africain d’Oncologie Pédiatrique to support more than 20 centers across sub-Saharan Africa. He also works closely with the World Health Organization to address global inequities in childhood cancer outcomes.
In 2023, Professor Loizou launched the Cyprus International Action Plan for Children with Cancer (Cy-IAPCC) to extend Cyprus’s pediatric oncology expertise to countries with limited resources. Led with the support of the ELPIDA Foundation, the initiative has delivered essential cancer medicines to multiple African countries, supported national cancer planning with WHO and regional partners, established pediatric palliative care, convened an international expert conference, and mobilized more than €420,000 in humanitarian support. In recognition of his decades-long impact, Professor Loizou has been honored as an Ambassador for Children with Cancer and Leukaemia by the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP).
