Kimryn Rathmell Recognized Among The 100 Most Influential People in Oncology in 2025

Kimryn Rathmell is one of the most influential physician-scientists in modern oncology, recognized globally for her pioneering work in kidney cancer and her leadership in academic medicine and national cancer policy. In May 2025, she became Chief Executive Officer of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, leading one of the United States’ foremost comprehensive cancer centers. A world authority on hereditary and complex renal cancers, her translational research has revealed fundamental mechanisms of tumor biology and directly informed new therapeutic approaches.

Previously, Dr. Rathmell served as the 17th Director of the U.S. National Cancer Institute (2023–2025), where she launched landmark initiatives including PROSPECT-Lung and the Early-Onset Cancer Initiative, while strengthening community-based clinical research nationwide. She earlier held senior leadership roles at Vanderbilt University as Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry, Hugh Jackson Morgan Endowed Professor, Physician-in-Chief, and Chair of the Department of Medicine.

A dedicated mentor and advocate for physician-scientist careers, she has guided hundreds of trainees and built national mentorship networks. Her contributions have been recognized with the 2025 American Cancer Society Medal of Honor and the ASCI Stanley J. Korsmeyer Award, and she has served in key national leadership roles, including President of the American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2019.
