Hagop Kantarjian Recognized Among The 100 Most Influential People in Oncology in 2025

Often described as the “King of Leukemia”, Hagop Kantarjian is one of the most transformative figures in modern hematologic oncology. As Professor and the long-serving leader of the Department of Leukemia at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, he helped build the program into a global epicenter of leukemia research and training. Over his career, he has authored more than 2,400 scientific publications, many of which directly changed clinical practice in CML, ALL, AML, and MDS, contributing to the development and approval of more than 20 life-saving therapies. His work has improved—and in many cases revolutionized—outcomes for millions of patients worldwide.

Dr. Kantarjian has mentored hundreds of oncologists who now lead major programs across the globe, extending his impact across generations. He is a co-founder and board secretary of the Society of Hematologic Oncology (SOHO), today one of the world’s fastest-growing professional societies in blood cancer. A fearless advocate for equitable access to cancer care and rational drug pricing, he is among the most influential policy voices in oncology. In 2023, ASCO recognized his extraordinary contributions with its highest scientific honor, the David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award.
