Douglas R. Lowy Recognized Among The 100 Most Influential People in Oncology in 2025

Douglas R. Lowy is a physician-scientist and global leader in cancer biology and viral oncology. He is Chief of the Laboratory of Cellular Oncology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and has served since 2010 as Principal Deputy Director of the NCI, including multiple terms as Acting Director. He is an NIH Distinguished Investigator and Head of the Signaling and Oncogenesis Section. Dr. Lowy is internationally recognized for his seminal work on human papillomavirus (HPV) which elucidated key aspects of the HPV life cycle and led to the development of the technology underlying the FDA-approved HPV vaccines, a breakthrough that has transformed global cancer prevention.

Dr. Lowy is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine, and a Fellow of the AACR Academy. His honors include the Lasker–DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award, the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the National Medal of Honor for Basic Research from the American Cancer Society, and the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal, among numerous international distinctions.
