“Not long after finishing his training at City of Hope, Sumanta Pal, co-director of our Kidney Cancer Program, offered a phase 1 clinical trial to a patient with advanced kidney cancer.
The patient had run out of viable options after other treatments failed, and the drug hand no proven benefit at that point. But he remained on it for years, and it was later approved by the FDA.
Dr. Pal reflects on that patient and the moment a breakthrough became real.”
