Alexandre Chan: The Growing Role of Pharmacists in Integrative Oncology

Alexandre Chan, President and Board Member of The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC), shared on LinkedIn:

“Supportive care and integrative oncology work best together, and this year’s Society for Integrative Oncology meeting showed it. The meeting reflected the growing alliance between The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and SIO. We had a full house for our MASCC/SIO plenary session – it was a pleasure to showcase the different modalities to manage symptom clusters w/AProf Hannah Wardill, Judith Lacey and Ting Bao. I also had productive conversations with SIO leadership about how our two organizations can work together to advance supportive care and integrative oncology. Thanks SIO again for your hospitality.

Another major highlight for me was seeing how pharmacists are making huge strides in integrative oncology. Work from pharmacists (go Jason Lam Chun Sing ! go Candy Tsourounis !) and pharmacy student (go Reem Nasr !) drew strong interest from the audience.

Their work in clinical care models, clinical research and policy research have earned wide recognition at the meeting. Making pharmacists part of the integrative oncology team is how we can keep this momentum going. I urge organizations like International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners (ISOPP) and Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) to take a more active role in advocating for pharmacists in integrative oncology. The pharmacy profession has a lot to contribute in supportive oncology and integrative oncology.

So much learning, so little time. I can’t wait to bring these insights home and share them with everyone.”
