Alexander Eggermont is a surgical oncologist and former General Director of Gustave Roussy (2010–2019), guiding one of Europe’s leading comprehensive cancer centers through a period of major scientific and clinical expansion. Before joining Gustave Roussy, Prof. Eggermont was Professor of Oncological Surgery at Erasmus University Rotterdam and Head of the Department of Oncological Surgery at the Daniel den Hoed Cancer Centre. His scientific work spans tumor pathophysiology, cancer immunology, and translational immunotherapy, contributing to the foundations of modern immune-based cancer treatment.
Prof. Eggermont has held several of the most influential leadership roles in European oncology, including President of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) from 2003 to 2006, Chair of the European Academy of Cancer Sciences, and International Evaluation Committee for German Cancer Centres.
A specialist in melanoma, sarcoma, and immunotherapy, he has guided major international clinical research programs and national oncology quality initiatives. His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the ASCO Statesmanship Award, the ESTRO Honorary Membership, the Krementz Award, the Tilanus Medal, and other European and Japanese scientific prizes.
