Alessandro Jacques Cortese has served as Chief Executive Officer of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) since 2009, overseeing the transformation of ESTRO into a central professional and policy-shaping organisation for radiation oncology in Europe and internationally. Under his leadership, ESTRO has expanded its scientific, educational, and professional development activities, supporting radiation oncology professionals across clinical practice, research, and technology innovation.
During Cortese’s tenure, ESTRO has significantly scaled its education and training platforms, including ESTRO Schools, congresses, and guideline initiatives, reaching thousands of practitioners annually. He has overseen the professionalisation and governance strengthening of the society, expanded membership services, and supported ESTRO’s growing role in workforce development, quality assurance, and access to radiotherapy across Europe. Through the ESTRO Cancer Foundation and partnerships with European and global stakeholders, he has helped position radiotherapy as an essential component of comprehensive cancer care and a priority within European cancer policy and capacity-building efforts.
