Akira Nakagawara Recognized among The 100 Most Influential People in Oncology in 2025

Akira Nakagawara is one of Asia’s most influential figures in pediatric oncology. Former President of the Chiba Cancer Center and Founder of the Japanese Childhood Cancer Association, he helped build Japan’s modern pediatric cancer infrastructure and shaped international standards for diagnosing and treating neuroblastoma.

Dr. Nakagawara has played a central role in advancing international collaboration in pediatric cancer research. He has held numerous influential leadership positions, including Continental President of SIOP Asia, Chair of the Asian Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Group (APHOG), and leader within the Japanese Neuroblastoma Study Group (JNBSG/JCCG).

He was a long-standing board member of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP). His leadership advanced national cancer control programs, strengthened multi-institutional research networks, and improved survival outcomes for children across Asia. His contributions have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Princess Takamatsu Cancer Research Fund Prize, the Japan Cancer Society Prize, the Prince Hitachi Prize for Comparative Oncology, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Advances in Neuroblastoma Research Association.
