About Yelak Biru

Yelak Biru’s story is one of survival, purpose, and dedication. Born in Ethiopia, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma just before his 26th birthday while in graduate school. At the time, doctors gave him only two to three years to live. But through a combination of cutting-edge treatments, faith, and the support of those around him—what he calls his “air, land, and sea” strategy—he has lived with the disease for nearly 30 years.

In the video titled “My 28-Year Journey as a Multiple Myeloma Cancer Patient,” Yelak Biru shares his experience living with multiple myeloma.

Rather than letting cancer define him, Yelak turned his experience into a mission. He became a globally recognized research advocate, working with leading organizations like the National Cancer Institute (NCI), ECOG-ACRIN, and Cancer Research UK’s Cancer Grand Challenges. His focus has always been on ensuring better resources, support, and access to treatment for patients worldwide.

With a master’s degree in computer science, Yelak built a successful career in data analytics, holding leadership positions at PepsiCo for 20 years, where he worked in roles including Global Director of Advanced Analytics and Business Intelligence Architecture. He later joined Walmart Global Tech as Senior Director of Data Analytics, Global People Analytics, leading innovative data-driven strategies from 2017 to 2021.

Despite his success in the corporate world, Yelak’s passion for patient advocacy ultimately led him to the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF), where he became President and CEO in 2021. During his tenure, he helped redefine the organization’s mission, envisioning “a world where every myeloma patient can live life to the fullest, unburdened by the disease.” He broadened the IMF’s global impact by increasing research funding, forming strategic collaborations, and launching innovative patient support initiatives.

Under his leadership, the IMF introduced Myelo, an AI-powered platform offering personalized, real-time support for myeloma patients and caregivers. He spearheaded the creation of the IMF’s Scientific Advisory Board, driving strategic research priorities, and expanded scientific research efforts into Latin America and Asia. Additionally, he helped extend the Global Myeloma Action Network (GMAN) and played a key role in leveraging the FDA’s ODAC committee’s positive vote on Minimal Residual Disease (MRD) as an early clinical trial indicator, leading to the launch of the i2TEAMM initiative in Europe.

Beyond his professional achievements, Yelak has been a strong advocate for digital equity and global access to cancer research. His leadership positioned the IMF at the forefront of innovation, collaboration, and patient-centered research in myeloma.

At the heart of Yelak’s journey is an unwavering commitment to making a difference. He is a survivor who understands the human impact of cancer firsthand. His story is one of resilience, hope, and service—driven by a determination to ensure that every patient, no matter where they are, has access to the care, knowledge, and support they need to live a full and meaningful life.
