Samuel Stevens, Common Sense Oncology Fellow in Cancer Policy at Queen’s University and VMO – Medical Oncologist at NSW Health, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As my fellowship with Common Sense Oncology at Queen’s University draws to a close, we leave Kingston with mixed feelings. It has been a tremendously enabling academic environment, full of generous mentorship, great collaborations, and meaningful work. At the same time, I am looking forward to returning home to Australia and reconnecting with family, friends, and colleagues as we take our next steps.
The past 12 months have given me pause to reflect on what success really means: while externally the ‘outputs’ are lauded, it is the ‘inputs’ which have been most memorable and meaningful – time with mentors, developing projects and ideas, being the gracious recipient of the support of my wife, kids and family, the spirit of adventure which took us here, and the experience of working in an environment that is built to supports clinician researchers.
Over the past few weeks it has been wonderful to celebrate these – receiving my fellowship graduation certificate from the newly minted Prof. Bishal Gyawali, my ‘friendtor’ who inspired this entire journey, my PhD supervisor Janette Vardy’s visit to Kingston, farewelling patients and colleagues, taking a family road trip through Alberta and BC’s magnificent Rocky Mountains, and receiving such a warm welcome back in Sydney from our families.
I’m excited to carry these lessons forward as I begin my role at Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD), finish up fellowship and PhD research and build a career as a clinician-researcher here in Aus.
Thank you, Kingston, Queen’s University and Common Sense Oncology. See you on Zoom soon.”
