Richard Barakat: Dr. Kanti Rai’s Farewell to Clinical Practice
Richard Barakat, Physician in Chief and Executive Director at Northwell Cancer Institute, shared on LinkedIn:
“Today we celebrated the end of Dr. Kanti Rai practicing as a hematologist/oncologist at the Zuckerberg cancer center.
Dr. Rai, 95, began his medical career in 1955, and after emigrating from India, completed a pediatric residency at Lincoln Hospital, located in the South Bronx prior to completing a fellowship in hematology/oncology at Long Island Jewish Hospital.
Dr. Rai, a renowned hematologist and researcher, is primarily known for his pioneering work in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), including the development of the Rai Staging System used to this day by clinicians to assess the risk associated with CLL and determine the appropriate treatment approach. Although completing his illustrious 40 year career at LIJ, Dr Rai will continue teaching fellows and residents as Professor Emeritus.”
