“Friends and colleagues: Yesterday I concluded my tenure at MD Anderson Cancer Center. I am excited to share that today I begin a new chapter at the The University of Texas Medical Branch, where I will serve as Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, and the founding Executive Director of the UTMB Cancer Center.
I am leaving UT MD Anderson with immense gratitude for the extraordinary colleagues, collaborators, and students, and with a profound sense of pride in what we built. I had the privilege to develop many new programs, serve our graduate school, recruit talented faculty, and I leave an exceptional Department of Cancer Biology with a 12-fold increase in federal research funding, a 14-fold increase in state and private funding, and the average journal impact factor quadrupled in only 10 years.
Our faculty filed 84 patents and founded 6 biotechnology companies, and we instilled a culture of translation and impact that will endure for years to come. The Kalluri Laboratory alone secured more than $70 million in extramural research funding in 13 years, a nearly 4-to-1 return on MD Anderson’s initial investment in my research program.
Most of all, we achieved something few labs ever have the privilege to experience: two fundamental discoveries at our bench at MD Anderson were translated to clinical trials in just a few years. Our exosomes clinical translation work led to a novel drug-delivery platform that has demonstrated exceptional safety, and was recently recognized by the Davos World Economic Forum as one of the Top 10 Emerging Technologies. I could not be more grateful to all the remarkable lab mates and collaborators who made it possible.
Today, new work begins at UTMB. I am tremendously excited by the opportunity to build this new cancer center and contribute to the bold investments in science, innovation and the implementation of AI. Big things are happening under Dr. Reiser and his exceptional leadership team, and I am deeply grateful to the UT System for their support of this vision at UTMB, and my role in it.
As for the Kalluri Lab, we’re not going far. Just across the street, where we will help anchor UTMB’s research presence in the TMC3 Helix Park. We look forward to welcoming our colleagues and collaborators to our new home.
