A new chapter is approaching for one of the world’s most influential pediatric cancer institutions.
After more than a decade as President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, James R. Downing announced earlier this year that he will step down, closing a remarkable period marked by major scientific advances, unprecedented global expansion, and continued growth of St. Jude’s mission to improve the survival of children with catastrophic diseases around the world.
Leadership transitions at St. Jude are rare. Since its founding by Danny Thomas in 1962, the institution has been guided by only a handful of presidents, each leaving a lasting imprint on its history. From the first CEO Donald Pinkel, who pioneered modern treatment for childhood leukemia, to Alvin Mauer, Joseph Simone, Arthur Nienhuis, William Evans, and most recently James Downing, every transition has helped define the next era of the institution.
According to St. Jude’s governance practices, presidents traditionally serve for approximately ten years before passing the baton to the next generation of leadership.
Now, attention turns to one question:
Who will become the next CEO of St. Jude?
The Board has conducted an extensive international search. While the process has remained highly confidential, to the best of our knowledge the search has now narrowed to two finalists—one internal candidate and one external candidate. St. Jude has not publicly confirmed the identities of the finalists, and the Board is expected to make its decision in the coming months.
Out of curiosity, we asked Claude AI, ChatGPT and Gemini a simple question:
“Who is going to be the next CEO of St. Jude? If you had to name one person, who would it be?”
Its answer was cautious but interesting. Based on publicly available information, institutional history, and leadership patterns, Claude AI suggested Charles Roberts, MD, PhD, executive vice president and director of the St. Jude Comprehensive Cancer Center. ChatGPT and Gemini suggested a different name: Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo, MD, Executive Vice President and Director of St. Jude Global.

Of course, artificial intelligence does not have access to confidential Board deliberations, and its assessment should be viewed as informed analysis rather than prediction. Ultimately, only the Board knows who will write the next chapter in St. Jude’s history.
Whoever is selected will inherit one of the world’s most respected pediatric cancer institutions—and the responsibility of leading it through a new era of scientific discovery, global collaboration, and hope for children and families everywhere.
The announcement is expected later this year.
