Mariel Bello Joins MUSC as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

Mariel Bello, Assistant Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“My dream has finally come true (see our swag for hints)!

My heart is full as I share that I’ll be joining the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and MUSC Hollings Cancer Center as a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)!

After nearly a decade of post-graduate training, I get to do what I love most: conducting research and collaborating with my wonderful colleagues to investigate the causes and mechanisms that contribute to disparities in substance use and addiction, specifically tobacco use, among underserved populations.

I couldn’t have gotten this far without the love, support, and guidance from so many along the way. My heartfelt gratitude and huge thanks first go to my life-long mentor/friend, Adam Leventhal, who was the first mentor to believe in me and my abilities to become a scientist, and who has generously provided me with a great deal of mentorship, insight, and guidance for my professional and personal development for 9 years.

I also want to extend my deepest gratitude and appreciation to my exceptional postdoc mentors: Suzanne Colby, Rachel Cassidy, and to so many other wonderful mentors: Caryn Lerman, Raina Pang, Jessica Barrington-Trimis, Junhan Cho, and Gerald Davison, for making such a meaningful and positive impact in my life, and for contributing to my broader program of research, clinical work, and professional aspirations.

Lastly, I would not be here today without the love, support, and ongoing encouragement from my husband, family, friends, and students/mentees who have all stood by my side and who have inspired me to achieve greater heights beyond what I could have ever imagined for myself.

For those interested in academia, I’m happy to chat anytime about my experience of applying to tenure-track faculty positions and being on the job market! Feel free to message me anytime and also happy to share my job application materials!

Also, special shout-out to my colleagues, Drs. Matthew Carpenter, Tracy Smith, Benjamin Toll, Alana Rojewski, Garrett S. Stang, and so many others for making MUSC already feel like a second home! Thrilled for this next chapter of my career and looking forward to collaborating!”
