The Department of Medicine (DOM) announced that Dr. Diane Reidy-Lagunes will be joining as the Chief of the Division of Medical Oncology, starting on April 1, 2025.
In this leadership role, Dr. Reidy-Lagunes will be responsible for overseeing the division’s strategic direction, clinical care, research initiatives, and educational programs. Alongside her role at DOM, Dr. Reidy-Lagunes will also serve as the Associate Vice President for Oncology Services at Duke University Health System. Her dual role reflects the importance of integrating clinical leadership with broader institutional objectives to enhance oncology services. Dr. Reidy-Lagunes brings a wealth of expertise in medical oncology, with a proven track record of advancing cancer care and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, which will be invaluable as she assumes these prestigious positions.
Dr. Diane Reidy-Lagunes will join the Department of Medicine (DOM) at Duke University as the chief of the Division of Medical Oncology, effective April 1, 2025. In addition to this role, she will serve as the Associate Vice President for Oncology Services for Duke University Health System. Her leadership experience and clinical expertise will significantly contribute to advancing Duke’s oncology services.
Dr. Reidy-Lagunes previously held several key leadership positions at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), where she served as vice chair of Medicine with a focus on the coordination of care within MSKCC’s Regional Care Network. She has also held roles such as president of MSKCC’s Medical Staff, clinical director for the GI oncology service, and co-director of the Medical Oncology/Hematology Fellowship Program. During the COVID-19 crisis, she served as chief of clinical care at MSKCC as part of the Hospital Incident Command System. Dr. Reidy-Lagunes is also the creator and host of the award-winning “Cancer Straight Talk” podcast, which connects patients with experts to provide evidence-based cancer care discussions.
Dr. Reidy-Lagunes’ research focuses on integrating molecular-based therapies into the treatment of neuroendocrine and adrenal tumors. She is actively involved with the National Cancer Institute Task Force on Neuroendocrine Tumors and the National Cancer Care Network Guidelines. Dr. Reidy-Lagunes has received numerous honors, including the Paul Sherlock Resident Housestaff Teaching Award and recognition as one of Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors.
About Dr. Carey Anders – Former Interim Division Chief of Medical Oncology at Duke University School of Medicine
Dr. Carey Anders has served as the interim division chief of Medical Oncology for the past three and a half years, demonstrating strong leadership and dedication. She has managed to lead the division while continuing her work at the Center for Brain and Spine Metastasis, significantly contributing to the institution’s efforts in this area. Her leadership has been integral to the success of the division, and her transition to the role of Associate Director for Clinical Research in the Duke Cancer Institute (DCI) will allow her to continue impacting cancer research.
In her clinical practice, Dr. Anders focuses on patients with breast cancer, particularly younger individuals and those facing recurrence in the central nervous system (CNS). She is deeply committed to the care of patients with breast cancer brain metastases and serves as the Medical Director of the Brain and Spine Metastases Program at the Duke Cancer Center. In this role, Dr. Anders leads a multidisciplinary team that coordinates comprehensive care for patients with breast cancer and other solid tumors that have metastasized to the CNS.
Additionally, Dr. Anders has a strong passion for guiding young women diagnosed with breast cancer, helping them navigate their treatment decisions while addressing the unique challenges they face. She ensures that her patients receive excellent medical care while also considering factors such as future fertility, the long-term effects of treatment, and the impact on personal relationships, both now and in the future. Her holistic approach to patient care is a testament to her commitment to providing compassionate and individualized support.
