About Bente Mikkelsen
Dr. Bente Mikkelsen is a recognized leader in global health, dedicated to tackling noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and advancing health equity. She recently joined St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as Director of Global Engagement Strategies, bringing years of experience in international health policy and collaboration.
Before this, she served as Director of Noncommunicable Diseases at the World Health Organization (WHO) Headquarters in Geneva (2020–2024), where she played a key role in shaping global strategies to reduce premature deaths from NCDs. Her previous roles include leading the WHO Regional Office for Europe’s NCD and Health Promotion Division and heading the Global Coordination Mechanism on NCDs, where she helped drive international efforts on prevention and control.
Beyond WHO, Dr. Mikkelsen has held leadership positions as CEO of the Southern and Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority and Director at Norway’s Ministry of Health and Care Services. She is currently on the Board of Directors of the World Diabetes Foundation, a Senior Advisor at Oslo Science City, and Chair of the Advocacy Steering Committee at the World Heart Federation.
A trained gynecologist and obstetrician, she also holds a Master’s degree in Health Administration and Management from the University of Oslo.
Dr. Bente Mikkelsen’s extensive experience and leadership in global health make her a pivotal figure in the fight against non-communicable diseases. Her work continues to shape international health policies, emphasizing innovation, collaboration, and the achievement of global health goals.
