Ardem Patapoutian was awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
The Nobel Prize shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Ardem Patapoutian – awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine – was born in 1967 in Beirut, Lebanon. In his youth, he moved from a war-torn Beirut to Los Angeles, USA and subsequently received a PhD in 1996 from Caltech, Pasadena, USA.
Today Patapoutian is a scientist at Scripps Research, La Jolla, California in the field of touch – specifically determining just how receptors in our body respond to pressure. His discovery of a novel class of pressure sensors has given us new insight into our bodies, and led to him receiving the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Ardem Patapoutian is a Lebanese-American molecular biologist, neuroscientist, and Nobel laureate of Armenian descent. He is recognized for his discovery of the PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 ion channels, which are essential for sensing mechanical pressure, and the TRPM8 receptor, which detects menthol and cold temperatures.
Dr. Patapoutian is a professor of neuroscience at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California, and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. In 2021, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine alongside David Julius for their groundbreaking discoveries of temperature and touch receptors.
