Scott Howard will be appointed Deputy Director of the Yeolyan Hematology Center of the Ministry of Health of Armenia
Prof. Scott Howard will be appointed Deputy Director of the Hematology Center named after Yeolyan of the Ministry of Health of Armenia. In the meantime, he will also serve as an Honorary Consultant at the Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Armenia and Senior Adviser at the Immune Oncology Research Institute.
Scott conducts research, education, training, informatics, and global health projects as CEO of Resonance (ResonanceHealth.org), manages pediatric hematology/oncology patients at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and teaches health economics at the University of Tennessee.
After training in internal medicine, pediatrics, and epidemiology at the University of Tennessee and completing a hematology/oncology fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, he has worked for 20 years treating children with leukemias and lymphomas and conducting research in oncology supportive care, international oncology, and healthcare informatics. He served as the Medical Information Officer at St. Jude and Chief Information Officer for the Guardian Research Network. In 2015 he founded Resonance (ResonanceHealth.org), which amplifies health through research, education, and technology, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Scott is a Professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, where he teaches health economics and conducts research in global oncology care. He is the co-founder of the Acute Leukemia Research and Care Network (networks.resonancehealth.org/networks/all-rcan/) and the Global Neuroblastoma Network (networks.resonancehealth.org/networks/gnn/), which bring together clinicians and researchers from 6 continents for weekly education and collaboration.
Dr. Howard served as a General Secretary of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology and Chairman of the Board of the World Child Cancer USA. He converted the Pediatric Oncology in Developing Countries (PODC) working group of the International Pediatric Oncology Society (SIOP) into a multidisciplinary committee now called SIOP Global Health with 12 Working Groups. He facilitated creation of an 8-center, 7-country research network in Central America, directed clinical research activities, infrastructure development, and research capacity building for the St. Jude International Outreach Program for 15 years.
He established and chaired for 6 years the Clinical Practice Guidelines committee of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO), as well as established the Global Health Special Interest Group of the ASPHO.
He enjoyed an 18-month sabbatical to work at the World Health Organization (WHO) headquarters in Geneva to help launch the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer. At WHO, Scott helped develop the technical package for childhood cancer, identify 6 index cancers as the focus for global efforts, conduct costing and health economic analyses, and develop “best buys” for childhood cancer. He also works to improve access to essential medicines and build workforce capacity. He is especially interested in applying genomics, pharmacogenomics, big data, information systems, and point-of-care informatics tools to improve patient care and outcomes. His research interests also include global access to essential medications, cancer supportive care, epidemiology, palliative care, and developing cancer programs in low- and middle-income countries. He conducts translational and clinical research with collaborators on 5 continents.
Scott serves as the International Development Officer for San Juan de Deu Hospital in Barcelona, Spain and in that role supports the hospital’s international research, global education, and inter-country patient care. Scott founded Resonance (ResonanceHealth.org) to improve care for people everywhere through research, education, and technology. He has authored/co-authored 240 scientific papers, 25 book chapters, and a book.
