Wee Joo Chng: Honored to be amongst 139 named professors in National University of Singapore!

Wee Joo Chng, Vice President of Biomedical Science Research at National University of Singapore, posted on LinkedIn:

“Honored to be amongst 139 named professors in National University of Singapore! This was mentioned at the inaugural named professorship event held at the University Cultural Center last evening.

The very nice dinner was curated and prepared by 2022 Master Chef winner Jonathan Chew who is a student at our dental school.

I was conferred the Yong Loo Lin Professorship in Medical Oncology earlier this year. I am proud to hold the professorship that bears that same name as NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

The Yong Loo Lin Trust has been a major donor to NUS and National University Cancer Institute, Singapore over the years.

The Trust first established the Professorship in 1996. Professor Yoshi Ito of Cancer Science Institute of Singapore NUS was the inaugural recipient and after his retirement, I am now the incumbent. I am most grateful to the Dean, Prof Yap-Seng Chong, for his trust and support in my work.

In 2005, the centennial of the medical school, the Trust provided a transformational gift of $100 million to the school, resulting in our current name. The high ranking of the medical school in global rankings today can trace it origins to this gift.

The Trust also provided a gift of $25 million, in the name of Dr Yong Loo Lin’s sister, Yong Siew Yoon, to NCIS. As the recent past Executive Director of NCIS, I therefore have a deep personal connection to the tremendous act of philanthropy of the Yong family and the Trust which has in so many ways helped to drive research and innovation in oncology at NUS and NCIS over the years!

Philanthropy can transform and accelerate research and innovations that eventually have broader societal impact on not just Singapore but potentially the world.”
