Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu: Community Power and System Strength Are Essential for Health Resilience
Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, UICC President-Elect of 2024-2026 and Founder of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The Oxford Africa Conference has been a leading platform for global dialogue on Africa’s development for over a decade, it is hosted by the Oxford University Africa Society (AfriSoc). At the 2025 edition, I participated in the Health and Wellbeing panel session, where we discussed ‘Community Power and System Strength: Building Resilient Health Systems for Crisis Preparedness in Africa.’
Drawing from my experience as a health professional and First Lady during the COVID-19 pandemic, I emphasized the need for the government to include private sector partners in health initiatives. Similarly, community engagement via social welfare structures is essential not only for cancer care but for achieving sustainable health outcomes across the continent.
Alongside brilliant minds like Prof. Obijiofor Aginam, Dr. Chizo Agwu, and Dr. David O. Odhiambo, moderated by Dr. Uchechukwu Arum, our conversation explored policy, innovation, and accountability in shaping Africa’s health architecture. It was very enlightening to hear the background negotiations and discussions of the Pandemic Treaty from Prof Obijiofor Aginam, who was one of the expert advisers.
Africa is finally investing in preparedness, not just as a response mechanism, but as a long-term commitment to the well-being of our people.”
