Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu Announces New Pan-African Cancer Partnership
Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, UICC President-Elect of 2024-2026, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Collaboration, teamwork, and sustainable partnerships are essential for successful health interventions. In light of this, I led Medicaid Cancer Foundation into a working partnership with the Union of African Cancer Organizations, which is currently Chaired by Algeria, as the Algerian Federation of Cancer Patient Associations, led by its President, Mrs Hamida Ketab.
Joining hands with cancer organizations from across Africa will strengthen advocacy, prevention, treatment, and research. This important step brings us closer to building a united front against cancer on the continent.
The Union of African Cancer Organizations currently has 16 member countries represented. These include Nigeria, Algeria, Tunisia, Ghana, Togo, Egypt, Senegal, Mauritania etc.
I was remarkably impressed by the Algerian Federation of Cancer Patients Associations which has 35 patient associations representing 35 Wilayas(Provinces).
Algeria has a population of 59 million, and is divided into 58 provinces. Currently classified as an Upper Middle income country, the strong economy, political will and health system, sets a powerful example of how national investment can improve outcomes in cancer care.
Thankful for the warm reception from my sister Hamida, Dr Mustapha Kettal, Prof Mochen Wahab, and Prof C Chemsedin as well as many other dedicated individuals and advocates who are contributing to a unified African voice in cancer control. Honoured to be a part of this movement.”
