Youssef Aboufandi, Digital Health Consultant at Various Companies and Urology Resident at NHS England, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Imagine a tool that could predict a life-threatening condition.
Or an AI device that transforms how cancer care is delivered.
These technologies are real and already adopted.
but proving their safety and efficacy is tough.
Why?
AI evolves as it learns, making evidence tricky to gather.
Data shift and Data drift complicate things even more.

Itโs a regulatory โ๐ฌ๐๐ง๐๐๐จ๐ฑโ run under Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency’s supervision.
The cohort of 5 startups will test their devices in virtual or simulated environments.
This will help them figure out how to generate evidence and acquire approval.
The 5 startups selected:
- Lenus Health (Craig Turpie)
- Philips (Atul Gupta, MD)
- Newton’s Tree (Haris Shuaib)
- OncoFlow (Aruni Ghose)
- Automedicaย
The aim for this ‘sandbox’ is to create a tailored regulatory framework built for AI.
This framework will give startups a clearer path to approval.
Which means faster access for the NHS and our patients to AI products.
Innovating safely in a rapid rate once sounded novel in healthcare, I’m optimistic that this will be a reality in the upcoming few years.
Do you think slow regulations is the current biggest bottleneck that AI in healthcare faces?”
