Prebo Barango: Member States at the 78th World Health Assembly have officially designated 17 November as World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day

Prebo Barango, Cross-Cutting Specialist NCDs and Special Initiatives at World Health Organization, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Member States at the 78th World Health Assembly have officially designated 17 November as World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day—marking a historic step in the global effort to eliminate a preventable cancer.
This milestone reflects the dedication, creativity, and collective resolve of advocates, survivors, communities, and health leaders around the world. Since the launch of WHO’s Global Strategy in 2020, 17 November has served as a catalyst for progress—expanding HPV vaccination, scaling up screening, mobilizing political commitment, and inspiring advocacy across countries and continents.
Now, as an official World Health Day, it becomes an annual moment to drive accountability, renew investment, and reaffirm the global commitment to ensuring that no woman dies from a preventable disease.
The resolution was brought forward by South Africa and Nigeria and co-sponsored by over 60 Member States from across WHO regions. This is more than a date—it’s a declaration of what’s possible when we act with urgency, equity, and shared purpose.
Read the official WHO announcement.”
