Isabel Mestres: The fight for equity in healthcare isn’t easy—but it’s one we cannot afford to lose
Isabel Mestres, CEO of the City Cancer Challenge, shared a post on X:
“Stop the world – I want to get off!
This iconic Mafalda line perfectly sums up how I feel today.
As I hit “send” on C/Can’s board papers on the fundrasing landscape, I can’t help but feel like the world is spinning out of control. First USAID, then France and the Netherlands, and now… UK aid budget cuts to 0.3% of GDP. It seems like just when we think things can’t get any more chaotic, they do. And what is next? In moments like these, I can’t help but miss those delightful Mafalda comics that always brought a smile to my face no matter what was happening.
We’re living in a time when political shifts are fast becoming the new norm. While this creates new obstacles for us, it also reinforces why our work at City Cancer Challenge is more important than ever. I’m inspired to push forward, knowing that our mission is to ensure everyone receives the care they deserve. The fight for equity in healthcare isn’t easy—but it’s one we cannot afford to lose.
For those who may not know, Mafalda is a brilliant, witty comic character (by Quino) who fearlessly speaks truth to power. Her humor and insight remind us to find lightness amid chaos.
