Wafik S. El-Deiry: System needs reform. We can do better
Wafik S. El-Deiry, Associate Dean for Oncologic Sciences at the Warren Alpert Medical School and Director of the Legorreta Cancer Center at Brown University, shared a post on X:
“Not sure how common my experience is in last 10 years of cancer research. Here’s a sampling of 31 grants submitted to NIH, some multiple times, rejected and/or not discussed. Many 1000’s of pages, 1000’s of hrs spent, and careers affected. System needs reform. We can do better.”
Quoting his post below:
“I should say that I am very familiar with the system having been a continuous reviewer since 1998 including as chair of study sections for different mechanisms over the years to the present time.
I am still here as a survivor to share my experiences while sadly many outstanding colleagues left the system or decided to change careers early on. I hope this adds perspective to the alarmism and doom and gloom that’s going around because I don’t see it that way.”
