Wafaa Rashed: A Critical Moment for Childhood Cancer Research
Wafaa Rashed, Chair and Founder of PAPERI, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A Critical Moment for Childhood Cancer Research.
A sudden policy change has sent shockwaves through the U.S. research community. A newly issued NIH funding notice has placed hundreds of millions of dollars at risk overnight – a move that could amount to billions in lost funding by the end of the year.
This decision doesn’t just affect U.S. scientists. It has global repercussions. Collaborative research in childhood cancer, genetics, and public health relies on stable funding, and uncertainty at this scale threatens years of progress. For those of us dedicated to childhood cancer research, this is deeply concerning. The U.S. plays a pivotal role in funding and leading groundbreaking discoveries that impact children worldwide. When that foundation is shaken, the ripple effects are felt across borders.
At a time when global collaboration is more important than ever, we must ask:
- What does this mean for the future of pediatric cancer research?
- How do we ensure that lifesaving work continues?
To my colleagues in the scientific community – especially those in the U.S. – we stand with you. Your work matters. Your research is vital. And in moments like this, solidarity is key.
‘Mr. President, cutting research is cutting the future – never slash, never sabotage, never surrender science.'”
