Voice of the families: Beniyam and his father – CANCaRe Africa
CANCaRe Africa shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Voice of the families, post 26 Beniyam and his father.
Beniyam, a 7-year-old boy, was admitted to Jimma University Medical Center with a diagnosis of Wilms tumor. His journey with the illness began at the age of one, when he first experienced abdominal swelling.
At that time, he was diagnosed with cancer and initiated treatment at Jimma University Medical Center. Unfortunately, his treatment was interrupted, but he appeared to be doing well for the past six years.
About a year ago, Beniyam’s abdominal swelling comes back. His family sought help at a local clinic, where he was referred back to Jimma University Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment.
His father shared that he had to borrow money around 5000 thousand birr to afford the trip to Jimma. The family is facing significant financial challenges, unable to afford further expenses.
Beniyam is the seventh child in a large family, further straining their resources. The families are primarily farmers.
Despite these difficulties, Beniyam and his family expressed immense gratitude for the financial cash transfer provided through the Zero Abandonment from Start to Finish project.
This support has given them hope and eased the financial burden. Beniyam’s father, Asefa emphasized the importance of continuing such assistance to ensure children like Beniyam can complete their treatment without interruption.
Appropriate consent given.”
