Voice of the Families: Amumpaire’s Story of Hope and Resilience – CANCaRe Africa
CANCaRe Africa shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Voice of the families, post No. 38 Amumpaire.
Amumpaire, a 5-year-old girl from Sheema District in Western Uganda, began experiencing abdominal distention over a two-week period. Concerned, her family sought care at a nearby health centre. An abdominal ultrasound revealed a suspicious mass, prompting a referral to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH), located approximately 30 km away.
At MRRH, Amumpaire was diagnosed with Wilms tumour, a type of kidney cancer commonly affecting children. She underwent a full course of treatment and has been on long-term follow-up since April 2025. Today, she is disease-free.
Her mother, filled with gratitude, shared:
‘I am so glad that my child is disease-free and I am preparing to take her to school next term.’
Amumpaire’s story is one of hope and resilience, showing the importance of early diagnosis, access to specialized care, and ongoing follow-up for childhood cancer survivors.
Appropriate consent given.”
