Ulrika Årehed Kågström: Sweden has the opportunity to be the first country in the world to eradicate cervical cancer
Ulrika Årehed Kågström, President of UICC, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Imagine if we could eradicate an entire form of cancer – in just a few years.
That’s exactly the chance we have right now. By offering free HPV vaccine to all women born between 1994 and 1999, Sweden has the opportunity to be the first country in the world to eradicate cervical cancer.
However, with only five months left of the free vaccine offer, it is worrying that the vaccination rate is so low – especially in the big cities where most women live.
The government has now doubled the support for all 21 regions to reach 70 percent vaccination coverage and thus be able to achieve herd immunity. This means that an additional 66,000 young women will need to take the vaccine before 1 July 2025.
If this goal is to be achieved, it is high time that the regions gear up their efforts so that more people can get vaccinated before it is too late. You can read more about this and what efforts are required on Aftonbladet Debate.”
