Lung cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide – UICC
Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Lung cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide — a growing and urgent concern that often goes under-recognised. While tobacco use remains a major risk factor, many women, especially in low- and middle-income countries, are exposed to other significant risks, including indoor air pollution from cooking with wood, charcoal, or other biomass fuels in poorly ventilated homes.
This exposure places women — and their children — at increased risk of respiratory illness and lung cancer, despite never having used tobacco. Socioeconomic disparities, limited access to health services, and a lack of awareness further compound the issue.
UICC and its members are advocating for gender-responsive cancer policies that not only address the unique risk factors women face but also ensure equal access to prevention, early detection, and care. From expanding clean cookstove initiatives to strengthening national cancer control plans with a gender lens, there is an urgent need to make lung health a priority for women everywhere.”
