From lab rotations to lifelong bonds: A grad student story – UF Health Cancer Center Cancer Training and Education Program

” ‘Many times when science brings us down can be quickly alleviated through the support and motivation of our peers and mentors, creating an ideal environment for a Ph.D. student to thrive,’ said Madison (Maddy) Carelock, a graduate student in the Cancer Biology Concentration of the University of Florida College of Medicine Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences.
This Graduate Student Appreciation Week, Maddy shared what she’s grateful for along her graduate student journey:
‘Throughout all 3.5 years of my Ph.D. journey thus far, I have been beyond blessed to be surrounded by loving and supportive colleagues who also became close friends and some ended up becoming just like family.
Specifically, I am grateful for my amazing lab and PI Dr. Zhang Weizhou for being one of the best mentors I could ever imagine having for my graduate school studies. He does not get enough credit for how wonderful he is at his job.
I am also grateful for my fellow Ph.D. student, roommate and best friend that I met during one of my lab rotations back in 2021. Maria Hernandez has been one of my biggest supporters throughout the years and many aspects of my education could not have been as successful without her constant support, love and guidance.’
Maddy’s research focuses on cancer biology, immunology and drug development. She is a past recipient of one of our Predoctoral Awards and a fellow in our Team-based Interdisciplinary Cancer Research Training Program.
We are grateful for Maddy’s many contributions to advance cancer research, as well as her service as president of our Ambassadors Program for graduate student outreach.
