Tracey O’Brien: Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide
Tracey O’Brien, Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of Cancer Institute NSW, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Australia has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world, yet a new report shows far too many of us are still not doing enough to protect our skin when outdoors. At least 95% of melanoma and 99% of non-melanoma skin cancers are caused by overexposure to UV radiation from the sun. By the end of this year alone, we expect almost 6000 people in NSW will be diagnosed with melanoma and more than 400 people will die from the disease.
It’s a misconception that UV radiation is only harmful during summer, with high UV index levels present in NSW 10 months of the year – even on cool and cloudy days. This winter, and all year round, the message is simple. If you’re outdoors, please do the things that have been drummed into us for decades – slip, slop, slap, seek and slide. These five simple steps are truly life-saving.
Access the Cancer Institute NSW’s Sun Protection Behaviours Report and read Grace Passfield’s story, who was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma at the age of 33.”
